Combined transportation plays an important role within today's rapidly changing trade dynamics. With globalization, the trade network has expanded and goods have begun to be sourced from many different regions. Developing transport capabilities make it easier for products to reach the market and support the implementation of global marketing strategies. Combined transportation brings different modes of transport together to offer more efficient and economical solutions, allowing companies to gain a competitive advantage in the global market. In particular, integrating different transport methods shortens transit times and reduces costs.

What Is Combined Transportation?

Traditional transport methods generally take three main forms: sea, road and air. Combined transportation, unlike classic transport, is a system that offers more than one transport option together. Thanks to the joint use of various transport modes, it enables goods to be carried more effectively and economically.

Multi-mode transportation, with its many advantages, has become one of the fundamental elements of international trade. In this way, the transport operation becomes faster and more reliable while costs are reduced significantly. It is preferred especially in situations where large volumes of goods need to be moved.

What Is the Most Important Feature of Combined Transportation?

Combined transportation means carrying a product from its point of origin to its destination using at least two different transport methods. It generally works by bringing together various methods such as road, sea, rail and air. In this way, products reach their destinations faster and more efficiently. The most distinctive feature of combined transportation is that the entire transport process is carried out by a single company.

The main company handles the carriage of the product without having to deal with various subcontractors. In this way, time loss and communication problems are minimized. It offers businesses cost efficiency while also increasing customer satisfaction.

What Are the Advantages of Combined Transportation?

Advantages of combined transportation bringing together sea, road and rail

Combined transportation offers efficiency and cost advantages achieved through the joint use of different transport methods. Particularly when sea and road transport are used together, the transfer of goods and cargo can be carried out much faster and more effectively. Cargo is carried by sea after being loaded onto special vessels known as Roll On Roll Off (Ro-Ro) ships. These vessels allow cargo to be handled more easily at ports accessible by road. In this way, the time between the cargo's arrival at the port and its loading onto the vessel is minimized.

Another combination involves the use of rail and road. Cargo is moved through specific transfer points. This method, known as Rollende Landstrasse, is highly suitable for transferring cargo arriving by rail onto the road network. Thanks to the operations carried out at the station during the transition of the cargo from rail to road, the transport process is accelerated. This makes it more convenient for the cargo to reach its destination.

Especially for goods to be sent from a region of Turkey to a European country, the combination of road and sea transport offers significant advantages. Products carried by truck are loaded onto vessels using auxiliary equipment such as wheeled ramps after reaching the designated port by road. The transition to the sea leg of the carriage is thus completed. When the cargo arrives at the port in the destination region, it is unloaded from the vessel using similar auxiliary equipment and delivered to the receiving company.

What Are the Types of Combined Transportation?

The types of combined transportation can be divided into two main categories. One of these categories is intermodal transportation and the other is multimodal transportation. While these two types of transport share similar characteristics, they also have many distinguishing features that give them their different names.

What Is Intermodal Transportation?

The most distinctive feature of intermodal transportation is that it is carried out using containers. In this type of combined transport, the goods and cargo to be transferred are carried in containers without being removed from them. In container transfer operations, large equipment such as cranes or auxiliary tools such as ramps can be used. Cranes are preferred when the cargo is heavy, while other auxiliary equipment is chosen for lighter loads. In this form of transport, carrying the cargo without removing it from the containers does not cause any reduction in the quantity of goods. This can be regarded as a factor that lowers costs. Certain contracts are required to carry out intermodal transportation. When the logistics company arranges these contracts properly, the shipment proceeds quickly and time savings are achieved. In combined transport operations, various carriers take part at each step. This transport method has been described as a combination of sea and road transport.

What Is Multimodal Transportation?

In the field of freight transport, multimodal transportation refers to the use of different transport methods to deliver goods to their final destinations. These methods can be road or sea. The main goal is to minimize transport costs and delivery times. This form of transport requires careful and meticulous logistics planning for both short and long-distance carriage. The multimodal approach can also be applied at a local level. However, the real purpose of this transport concept is to obtain maximum benefit from various resources around the world. Choosing this type of logistics can also encourage the ambition to reach new and developing markets.

Multimodal transportation should not be confused with intermodal transportation. Although both systems have similar features and logic, there are differences between them. In multimodal transportation, more than one means and method of transport is used. The most important difference that separates it from intermodal transportation is the number of carriage contracts. While intermodal transportation requires more than one contract, multimodal transport operations can be completed with a single contract. In addition, in this type of transport, unlike intermodal transportation, a single party is responsible for all carriage processes. Unlike the limited (road-sea) combinations of intermodal transportation, multimodal transportation can be carried out with various combinations. When determining these combinations, attention is paid to factors such as reducing costs, ensuring a fast and effective transport process and preventing damage to the goods. How Is the Right Method Chosen in Combined Transportation?

There are certain points to consider when choosing among combined transportation alternatives. Determining the right method prevents any problems during the transport processes. First of all, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of the products or cargo to be carried. Some products can be affected by temperature changes or general weather conditions. For this reason, how these products will be packaged, how they will be protected and how long they will be in transit should be determined in advance. Once the necessary steps have been taken to protect the products, a decision should be made on which transport routes will be used. In combinations created from sea, rail, road or air options, the first point to consider is completing the documents required for the goods to be carried by these routes. To manage these processes correctly, it is advisable to work with a logistics company with a reputable position in the sector.
